OVC Media Day USI Men's and Women's Basketball Season Previews

EVANSVILLE, Indiana (WFIE) - The Ohio Valley Conference held its annual Media Day in Evansville on Tuesday.

As the Eagles begin their second season at the Division I level, both the University of Southern Indiana men's and women's basketball teams were represented at the event.

On Tuesday, the OVC Conference released its preseason predictions, and the Eagle men were picked to finish ninth in the league.USI men's basketball head coach Stan Guar has been paying close attention to the team's philosophy as he has lost a lot of starters to graduation and transfers, and a lot of new faces have emerged.

"I think the most important thing for me is to try to build some sort of brotherhood with this team that's about to transition to the baseball field," Guard said." In fact, the shirts in our weight room say 'brotherhood' and I really want to capture that.

"The biggest thing for us is that we lost Polakovic, who contributed 13 rebounds per game last year, and we lost one of our best three-point shooters last year in Trevor Leakes. Simmons is that guy. He's a great athlete and can score for his team." We So, we have some guys who can fill those shoes, but it takes a collective group to make it all happen."

The USI men's basketball team will kick off its season on Nov. 6 in St. Louis.

Head coach Rick Stein is looking forward to the new USI women's basketball season. Led by Gibson Southern veterans Vanessa Shafford and Meredith Reilly, his team features returning veterans as well as freshmen and transfers.

The OVC Select USI women's team finished sixth in the league and both Shafford and Reilly were named to the Preseason All-Conference Women's Team.

"The women," Stan said, "had a great year last year as returning players and obviously had some good success." This team is also very new with six newcomers. We are trying to put together a whole new team with a lot of different things to work on.

"So we are very excited about how we are working together at the moment. Any time you bring in new players, you have to make changes. We have two players who transferred from Division I women's basketball. They are good players, but we have to teach them different things. However, I have to commend our players and how they have made changes and grown in what we are doing and how we are doing it.

The Lady Eagles will host Wright State on November 6th.
